Tokyo'da Güneş Çağı'nın 198. Yılı, özel itfaiye ekipleri, insanların "Cehennemler" adı verilen canlı cehennemlere dönüştüğü kendiliğinden insan yanması adı verilen bir olguya karşı savaşıyor. Cehennemler kendiliğinden insan yanmasının ilk nesil vakaları olsa da, sonraki nesiller insan formunu korurken alevleri manipüle etme yeteneğine sahiptir. Ayaklarını istediği zaman tutuşturma yeteneği nedeniyle Şeytanın Ayak İzleri takma adını alan bir genç olan Shinra Kusakabe, karşılaştıkları Cehennemleri söndürmeye çalışan diğer alev kullanıcılarından oluşan Özel İtfaiye Bölüğü 8'e katılır. Cehennemleri yaratan bir grup ortaya çıktıkça Shira, on iki yıl önce ailesinin ölümüne neden olan gizemli bir yangının ardındaki gerçeği ortaya çıkarmaya başlar.
